Science at Beechwood

The aims of science are to enable children to:

·          ask and answer scientific questions using appropriate language;

·          plan and carry out scientific investigations, using equipment safely;

·          know and understand the life processes of living things;

·          know and understand the properties of materials

·          know and understand the physical processes of electricity, light, sound and natural forces;

·          know about the nature of the solar system, including the earth;

·          evaluate evidence and present their conclusions clearly and accurately.

At Beechwood use a variety of teaching and learning styles in science lessons. Thinking skills are used to support teaching and learning in the science curriculum.    Throughout the year, a range of work should be displayed and or shared on Seesaw so that children can feel proud of their achievements.  Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills, and understanding. We engage the children in enquiry-based activities encouraging the children to ask, as well as answer, scientific questions making life-long learners. They have the opportunity to use a variety of data, such as statistics, graphs, pictures and photographs. Where it enhances their learning, children use ICT resources. Pupils are encouraged to use their knowledge of the thinking tools when taking part in discussions and presenting findings to the rest of the class. They engage in a wide variety of problem-solving activities. Wherever possible, we involve the pupils in ‘real’ scientific activities, for example, making investigations using the local environment or carrying out a practical experiment and analysing the results. Each year, the children will have the opportunity to plan and carry out an investigation on which the class has decided encouraging them to be independent thinkers. This will involve the children creating their own aim and method.

We are also proud to have a forest school and pond on site which provides fantastic opportunities for us to engage in first-hand experiences particularly when learning about living things and their habitats.

Ogden Trust
We are proud to be a partner school of Ogden Trust, growing the science capital of our children through collaboration with other Halton schools.
We will be working collaboratively with the partnership to promote the teaching and learning of physics.

Crest Award
Every year, our Year 1 children and our Year 5 children work towards gaining a Crest Award.
