Curriculum Overview

Our Curriculum

At Beechwood Primary School, our curriculum is based on the September 2014 National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 & 2 and the Early Years 2021 framework in Reception. Our rigorous, well planned curriculum, combined with high quality teaching, ensures that children are well prepared for life; equipping them to be thoughtful citizens and life-long independent thinkers and learners who can confidently face the challenges of the technological world. Enjoyment is a key feature of our lessons and teachers plan interactive, exciting lessons that engage and challenge all children.

Spiral Curriculum

In all of our subjects, we have designed our curriculum as a spiral curriculum with the following key principles in mind:

Cyclical: Pupils return to the key knowledge and skills again and again during their time in primary school.

Increasing depth: Each time a skill is revisited it is covered with greater complexity.

Prior knowledge: Prior knowledge is utilised so pupils can build upon previous foundations, rather than starting again.
Long Term Plans
At Beechwood, we have carefully designed our curriculum into a three year rolling cycle to take into account that in Key Stage 2, we have mixed aged classes of Y3/4 and Y4/5 in some of the areas of the curriculum. We have ensured that through our design, all children build upon their prior learning and are challenged to achieve thier full potential.
Characteristics of Learning
Alongside the children, Subject Leaders have spent time focussing on what it means to be a Historian, or Linguist at Beechwood. Each Lead Learner has designed the following to reflect the children's views on the Characteristics of the Learners in each subject.
